Kit for a day after Salmon on the Taw, Tamar or Torridge

ESSENTIAL KIT FOR BEGINNERS.

Below is a list of the basics needed for a days salmon fishing

·        WADERS – Either thigh or chest.  Chest are preferable as, if nothing else they allow a sit down in wet conditions!

·        ROD/REEL/LINE – 9.5 – 13ft.  Floating lines will suffice.

·        A HAT – for head protection

·        WATERPROOFS – A packable rain layer is a good idea.

·        EYE PROTECTION – Sunglasses are best if they are of the polarised variety.

·        SELECTION OF FLIES

·        LEADER – 10 or 12lb is ideal.

ALSO

The experienced angler might want to take along trout tackle.

The brownies in the west are free rising, hard fighting fish of between 6oz and a pound.  Having said that 2lb fish are not uncommon and a wild fish of that size is a real handful.

8 to 9.5 ft rods rated 5 – 7 are ideal.

Flies to try are pheasant tails both dry and nymph; hare’s ear nymphs; butcher; black and peacock spider; any general olive imitation e.g Greenwell’s or beacon beige; black gnat.
